Clothing Tips

January 15, 2010

Clothing choices are critical, they determine how heavy you look, whether you look healthy or ill, illustrate your station in life, etc. This is true in real life, but even more in photographs.
Avoid clothing that shows off your upper arm, or that is light colored, or that has horizontal stripes like the plague. These make you look heavier than you are. To look slimmer, wear darker shades. Also, stripes can make you look much heavier than you really are. So avoid stripes if possible. This will help you to look as slim as possible in your portraits. Unless, of course, you want to look heavier than you are. If so, please tell us, as there are a lot of “stupid photographer tricks” (thanks to David Letterman for that phrase) that we do to make you look lighter, and we can avoid them to make you look heavier.

#1 tip for girls: SLEEVES. Upper arms are notorious for looking heavy and/or soft. So, unless you are supermodel thin, wear some sort of sleeve to cover the upper arm.

#1 tip for guys: ELEGANT. Almost without fail, the complaint we hear from guys is that they wished they had dressed more formally or elegantly for the head and shoulders image. If you wear a shirt and sweater for your images, you will wish you’d worn a jacket and tie. Whatever you would wear to a wedding is what you should wear for the head and shoulders image, and even some full body images. We will also do some casual images, but be sure to get those truly elegant looks.

Stay tuned, we add more tips every week!
